Dear Hereford Alumni
When the first alumni e-newsletter was published
more than a year ago, I wanted to - and indeed intended to, make it a monthly occurrence. I
had no way of
knowing at the time that my ambition was simply
unrealistic.
Of course, there is never a shortage of Hereford
alumni news and I've never been known to have
writer's block. But in spite of my high level of
commitment, I have come to realize that sending out
a monthly newsletter is essentially contingent
upon how much time I can actually commit each
month. We all
have things that we love to do: perhaps a hobby or a
pet project of sorts. For me, nothing gives me more
pleasure than to offer up a bit of news for you, the
alumni newsletter
reader. But as a family man I've got a primary
responsibility - my job. As
someone once said, "time is of
the essence" and it is not always easily obtained.
I have come to learn that gathering all of the
necessary information and photographs
for each article in each newsletter does take a good
deal of time.
Moreover, my meticulous concern about each little
detail sometimes finds me on the short end of time.
Nevertheless, no matter how long it takes, this
newsletter will be
published. Maybe not every month. Perhaps not every
other month. However, you can bet your bottom dollar
that you will
hear from this organization, from time to time, and
know that Hereford's alumni community is alive and
well!

Mays (Class of 70)
| New Website Now On The World Wide Web! |
 |
|
Several significant changes and additions have been
made recently to Hereford High School Alumni
Association's website. There is now a Photos page featuring photos
from last
summer's multi-class reunion. The Newsletters page
archives periodic newsletters just in case you may
have missed any of the electronic publications that
were sent via email. Any
comments made by our alum that are noteworthy will
be posted on the new Comments page.
In addition, there is a separate page for us to
remember our classmates on the Memorials page.
This page also offers a beautiful rendition of
Hereford's Alma Mater that you can hear online as
recorded by The McCampbells of Dallas, Texas. Golf
shirts, baseball
caps, the 2006 Memory Book, the Photo CD & DVD,
and the new mug can be seen on Herd Stuff page. An
order form can be printed to place your order and Visa,
MasterCard, Discover, and checks are accepted.

| Alumni Spotlight: Shyla Thomas High Met Her Match In The Friendly Skies On Flight 1492 |
 |
|
Let's talk about airline travel compatibility. Have you
ever traveled alone on a long flight and was seated
next to someone who wanted to talk the whole time
when you wanted to sleep? Or have you ever gotten
stuck on a plane's window seat next to a talkative
passenger who was just down-right annoying or had
bad breath? Nowadays, there are dating websites
that will match you in advance with someone
compatible for the purpose of air travel so that you're
not placed in an unpleasant situation for two, three, or
four hours.
Of course, there was no such service nearly
twelve-and-a-half years ago when Shyla Thomas High (Class of 75) , and Don High met on that fateful plane trip. "We
met on Delta flight 1492, flying from Dallas to Boston
on September 29, 1994. We sat on row 24 in front of
the exit door", Shyla explains. "The first thing I said
was 'you know, our seats don't go back'. He (Don)
was working on a law suit and I was going to see the
leaves turn with mother in New England", she says
regarding the flight.
Don High graduated from Conroe High School in
1978 and
from Baylor University in 1982. After undergraduate
school, Mr. High graduated from Baylor Law School in
1985.
Upon graduation from Hereford High in 1975, Shyla
moved to Austin and graduated from the University of
Texas College of Pharmacy in 1979. After college she
practiced pharmacy in the Dallas area for eight years.
She headed to medical school in 1988 at Texas Tech
University and
graduated in 1992. As a doctor, Shyla did her post
graduate training in internal medicine and cardiology.
She is currently a cardiologist on staff with Cardiology
Consultants of Texas in Dallas and has been there
for more than eight years. Today,
husband Don is an attorney in Dallas with his own
private practice. They both enjoy snow skiing,
water sports, and musical theatre. Don is also an
actor-singer and is involved annually in theatre in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area. Currently, the Highs do not
have children.

| Editor's Note: Unusual Items On Ebay? How 'Bout A 1955 Hereford Roundup For $9.99! |
 |
|
You can find a lot of unusual stuff these days on
Ebay, the online auction site. There's been a grilled
cheese sandwich with an image of the Virgin Mary on
it, a pregnant lady selling corporate ad space on her
belly, and more recently, the hair of out-of-control, pop-
singer, Britney Spears. But I never thought that I'd find
a Hereford High School yearbook from the 1950's and
then actually buy it from the comfort of my home
in Euless, Texas. Okay, I know that for some people
this may not be a big deal but when you're the head
of an alumni association...in charge of finding
Hereford exes...for the sake of keeping those exes up-
to-date on activities and subjects of interest...then it's
a big deal!
To be honest, I was a little miffed and hard pressed to
understand why anyone would actually sell their
high school yearbook. Aren't yearbooks suppose to
be a kind of heirloom or keepsake, reminding us of
the good ole' days yesteryear? Okay, I'll admit that I
sold my high school
senior ring when I needed money really bad as
a freshman at West Texas State in Canyon. But that
was when I was a freshman. I was young and
stupid, not to mention a broke college student! But
isn't
it true that older we get, stuff like yearbooks, track
medals, pom poms, and other mementos that
seemed trivial and unimportant when we were young
and fresh out of high school, suddenly become terribly
important as
we grow old? With that in mind, I will gladly
purchase any
Hereford Roundup yearbook from the Fifties for under
$10...except, of course, the year 1955. (From the Editor,
Lee Mays - Class of 70)
