Greetings!
It has been a blessing for me to have
witnessed
the success and impact that Hereford High
School
Alumni Association's newsletters and website
have
had upon Hereford's alumni community. I've
received many emails, letters, and phone calls
from Hereford folks who
have thanked me for our efforts and for
making it
possible for them to reunite with classmates,
schoolmates, teachers, and
friends.
As we begin our fourth year in business, I am
looking forward to seeing and hearing many
more
expressions
of gratitude as we continue the wonderful
experience
of reuniting people. There will be more
spectacular and exciting events as our
mission to
revisit the good old days at Hereford High
continues in the months and years to come.

| Class of 1978 Valedictorian, Cindy Ford Skypala, Reflects Upon Thirty Years Since Graduation Speech |
 |
|
Wow, 30 years! That is hard to believe!
When
newsletter editor, Lee Mays, asked me to do
this
month's alumni spotlight article, I
immediately began to think about what has
changed in 30 years and what I have learned
it
that time. In trying to gain some perspective I
tried to remember what I said at graduation.
After
a phone call to my mother, who went to a pile
of
boxes, and to one labeled "1978"...Bingo!
The
speech was right there! After reading it, it still
seemed
pertinent today so I wanted to share it with
you
again. This brings me to one thing that has
changed in 30 years: today, when it is widely
believed that there is more free speech than
ever, I
would never be allowed to say what I did at
graduation in 1978. But I'll get off that soap
box!
Personally, I'll be married thirty years in
August to
a wonderful guy, Greg Skypala! (Greg is a
1975
Hereford graduate). We moved from
Hereford to Amarillo in 1989. For most of our
married life, we have been self employed.
Greg
has gone from being an electrical
contractor, to
electrical sales, to now owning a rep agency
which furnishes large electrical equipment to
the
utility, industrial, and wind industry. All along
I've
been the secretary, treasurer, inside sales
person
and whatever other position needed to be
filled.
We have two great kids; Gabe, who has been
married for three years and now lives in
Amarillo
and works with us; and Beth, who lives in the
Dallas area and just became a personal
trainer
after teaching and coaching for a couple of
years.
No grandchildren yet but we are looking
forward to
them! We were blessed that both of our
children
attended college on full athletic scholarships.
Our
son, Gabe (29), went to Samford University in
Birmingham, Alabama where he played
basketball. And daughter, Beth (26), went to
Texas A&M in College Station where she
played
volleyball. Greg and I just started construction
on
a new home on 5 acres in a development just
on
the outskirts of Amarillo. A barn on the same
property houses our office and we've
accumulated
a horse, 3 dogs, and 2 cats so we are feeling
like
regular country folks! We enjoy life with each
other, wonderful family and friends and would
love
hearing from our HHS classmates!
What I've
learned in 30 years? That God is good ALL
the
time, through calm and through storms. That
most
of what we worry about never happens. That
most
of what we spend our time on is not important
in
the grand scheme of things. That when life
seems
hard, a phone call comes in that a family
member
who has 5 children lost absolutely everything
when their home burned to the ground. That
when
we're feeling generous, someone has opened
their
home, hearts and bank account to total
strangers
who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. That
when we're feeling brave, someone braver,
like 19
year old Army PFC. Ross McGinnis, jumps on
top
of a grenade in Iraq and saves the life of his
comrades. After thirty years I hope we have all
learned to better keep things in perspective,
to not
worry so much, to be grateful for what we
have, to
give more, love more, be happy and
remember our
class motto: "What we are is God's gift to us.
What we become is our gift to God." It's never
too
late to "become".

(Written on April 17, 2008) "Hello Lee:
I,
once again, have the opportunity to
thank you and the Hereford Alumni
Association for
putting me in contact with an old friend from
high
school. ...I received an email...from not only a
classmate, but a close friend and neighbor.
(Jerry
Kendrick - Class of 1968). We spent many
wonderful hours together as boys and young
men.
I had not heard from him in 25 or 30 years
before
the (Jerry's) email. Since you started the
association, I
have been afforded the opportunity to be in
contact
with many old friends that otherwise I would
have
no clue as to where they are. Lee, this is the
best
things ever done for all past Hereford High
School
graduates. Don't ever stop. Thank you and
God
bless, Fred Conyers" (Class of 1967)
