Greetings!
It's been a while since an
actual newsletter has
been published. In fact, the last alumni newsletter
was published back in June, 2007. However, over
the past
few months you may have received various email
bulletins and
promotions leading up to last month's Hereford
Alumni Roundup Reunion in Grapevine, Texas.
These e-newsletters are somewhat permanent and
more widely read because they are eventually
posted on alumni web site's Newsletter archive
page.
The second annual Hereford
alumni all-school
reunion which was held last month was a dandy!
And now that it's been a least a full month since
the reunion and I've had time to recover, I am
looking forward to what's ahead for this
organization in 2008.
For me, planning events fo
r Hereford's alumni
community is a labor of love. The key word is
labor - as it takes a great deal of time and effort
leading up to each event. However, the reward is
indescribable! Seeing dear old friends from the
past and making new ones is a key ingredient that
has truly enriched my life. And life enrichment is
what each of the past two multi-class reunions
has been for me...and is something that I wish
each and every Hereford alum could experience.
From the Editor - Lee Mays (a.k.a. Percy
Mays, Class of 1970)
| Hereford Alumni Roundup Lunch & Wine Tasting Event...Magnificent! |
 |
|
There was a good group in attendance at the
Hereford Alumni Roundup Lunch and Wine Tasting
Extravaganza which was held on Saturday,
October 6, 2007 at La Buena Vida Vineyards in
Grapevine, Texas. It was an opportunity for
Hereford's alumni to get a head start on the day
by getting reconnected with old friends and
classmates prior to that evening's
reunion dinner. There were a total of thirty-two
who attended the three-hour lunch event. Twenty
of Hereford's wine enthusiasts were on hand for
the
wine tasting class which was coincidentally taught
by Adam Artho, who is employed by La Buena
Vida Vineyards as a wineologist and whose
parents are from Hereford. Adam, who attended
elementary school in Hereford but is a
1992 graduate of Vega High School, is the son of
Raymond Artho (Class of 1967)
and Christi Loerwald Artho (Class of 1969),
who were both in attendance for the wine
tasting class.

| Hereford Alumni "All-Star, Train-Wreck Band" Was Actually Pretty Good! |
 |
Most of those who played in the Whiteface band
back in the sixties and early seventies that
volunteered their time to play in
the "Hereford Alumni All-Star, Train-Wreck Band"
at last month's in
Grapevine hadn't play much over the past few
years and in some case, decades since
graduating from Hereford High School. But that
didn't stop any of them from trying at the Hereford
Alumni Roundup Dinner on October 6. And one
would have assumed that their sound would have
taken you all the way back to 7th grade beginners'
band class when they took the stage at the
reunion dinner. No way! Under the direction of
Ray Leasure (Class of 1970), and wife
Marylin
Murphey Leasure (Class of 1971), the
make-shift band actually sounded
pretty good! On bass clarinet was Ray Leasure,
Kay Euler Barber (Class of 1970) - flute,
Marilyn Murphey Leasure - clarinet, Joe Pesina
(Class of 1971) - tenor sax, Tyler Thompson
(Class of 1967) - and Joe Angel (Class
of 1969) - trumbone. The group did an
excellent job of performing the Herd Fight Song as
well as Hereford's Alma Mater. The banquet that
evening concluded with everyone standing and
singing the
school song.

| Hereford Alumni Dinner & Hostile Herd Breakfast Were Top Reunion Events |
 |
|
Julie Mays, wife of Hereford High School Alumni
Association founder, Lee Mays, said that the
Hostile Herd Breakfast Buffet was the most fun of
all of the alumni reunion's events. Julie, a 1974
graduate of Trinity High School in Euless,
Texas, was one of about a dozen present for the
breakfast which was held on Sunday, October 7.
The event took place at
The Vineyard Restaurant inside the Hilton DFW
Lakes in Grapevine. For
three hours over the extended breakfast, the group
spent time
laughing, reminiscing about classmates,
talking about Hereford, and trying to remember the
names of the two hamburger joints on opposite
ends of "the drag" in our hometown during the
1960's. It
was
remembered, and everyone at the table was
certain, that one of
turnaround spots was called "A & W
Rootbeer." Do you remember the name of the
other hamburger drive-in?
Denise King Stark (Class of=
1966),
(pictured above on the right with fellow
1966 classmate, Gwyn Albracht
Broome), was the
only one at the alumni breakfast who could
remember that the name of the little eatery that
students herded to across the street from
the high school was called "The Corral"
back in the sixties. Now do you remember the
name of the lady who was it's owner?
Also, do you remember those "humdingers" we all
enjoyed back in those days?

| Financial Advisor & TV Personality, Class of
1973's Suzanne Smith Collier Lives "The Possible Dream" |
 |
|
Alumni Spotlight Editor's Note by Lee
Mays: Last summer, I was
working from my home office on the computer with
my back turned away from the television set while
absorbing the morning news as I usually do.
While listening, I heard this familiar voice. Since I
had met Suzanne Smith Collier (Class of
1973), and
had been around her on several occasions as a
result of her being on the reunion venue
committee for the Hereford Alumni 2006 Multi-
Class Reunion last year, I could truly say, "I'd
know
that voice anywhere!" Wondering if my ears were
deceiving me, I swiveled my chair
around to
view my television and sure enough,
there she was, Hereford's own Suzanne Collier on
live TV, giving out financial advice on the
popular Dallas-Fort Worth morning show, Good
Morning Texas on WFAA Channel 8.
I knew that voice because Suzanne's
voice,
her personality, and her overall great sense of
humor cannot be mistaken for anyone else's once
you've been around her. And anytime I hear that
it's a graduate from Hereford High School whose
out there accomplishing something good and
noteworthy for the entire world, then my first
instinct is to get their story published in this
newsletter so that the entire Hereford alumni
community can know about it. So with that
backdrop, please click onto the link below and
take a few minutes to read Suzanne's bio, which
are in her own words...
"My parents raised me to believe that anything
would be possible and that I could
be or do
anything I wanted", says Suzanne Smith
Collier. "So, through my life, I set out to see if
that theory would stand the test of time."

| Advice From Suzanne Smith Collier: Credit Cards Are Weighing Us Down |
 |
|
By Suzanne Smith Collier
: It's not
just your imagination!
Think your
payments are due quicker than ever? Find late
charges on every bill? Did your interest rate start
out low and is now higher than Mount Everest?
You're not crazy! All these things may very well
be happening! It is amazing how many ways
credit card companies are making money - and
making life miserable for so many people. I've
said credit cards are the devil before, and I believe
that more than ever.

| Calling All Detectives! The Search Is On To
Find Your Hereford Classmates! |
 |
Whether Detective Sherlock Hol=
mes ever uttered
the words "elementary, my dear Watson" is purely
speculative. But we do need to
go back
as far as elementary school to try to
find those classmates who have drifted away like
the wind. This
means that we must have a detective's mentality
and go all-out to track down each and every
classmate we shared those PB&J sandwiches
with back in Hereford. If you're a class leader with
this desire
and have maintained your class' list, then please
send it to us. If you have an electronic
list of your then email it to:
info@herefordalumni.com. If you have a hard copy
file then mail it to: HHS Alumni Association -
1108 Oakridge Drive - Euless, Texas 76040. We
have software that will allow us to take a name
and an address and do an aggressive search in
order to possibly arrive with that
individual's current address and telephone
number. It's not a perfect science but it's
worth the effort. Once we've done our research
then we'll send you the results. It's extremely
important that we make our best effort to find
every lost classmate from Hereford.

"A Roaring Success!" Hereford's Alumni were Dazzled
by Ben Gollehon's Reunion Presentation |
|
|
|
Deborah Boardman Prather (Class of 1970)
called it "a roaring success!" Janice Brittain
Faulkner (Class of 1967) said, "it was so
much fun...I just wish everyone could have
attended." Kathleen Berry (Class of 1963)
called it, "a wonderful reunion!" And Ray
Leasure (Class of
1970), who attend the
Hereford Alumni 2006 Multi-Class Reunion
said, "this reunion was even better than the one
we had last year!" All comments were in
reference to the 2007 Hereford Alumni Roundup
Reunion which took place in Grapevine on
Saturday, October 6
and Sunday, October 7. It was the speech and
video presentation offered
by former Whiteface Band director, Ben Gollehon,
that got Hereford's alumni applauding with several
standing ovations as they honored and celebrated
with Hereford pride the man who started a rich
tradition and whose name has become
synonymous with Texas high school band
excellence.
Upon the group's arrival at Grapevine's Love and
War in Texas Restaurant, they mixed and mingled
for about an hour. Afterwards, the dinner was
officially launched with an invocation provided by
Dr. Jack Aikin (Class of 1967). Hereford
High School Alumni Association founder and
president, Lee (Percy) Mays (Class of 1970),
served as the evening's master of
ceremonies. The alumni
association's table top and memorabilia display
was provided by those in attendance which
included old Whiteface Band letter jackets, old
photos and Hereford Brand newspaper articles,
and Roundup yearbooks.
Angela Jacobs Grubbs (Class
of 1972),
introduced Ben Gollehon to the enthusiastic
crowd of more than 100 in attendance for the
alumni dinner. Mr. Gollehon, who was
accompanied by his wife of 49 years, Virginia,
resides in Kingwood, Texas and is chairman of the
Alpha Chapter Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame
committee. He also judges high school band
contests for the state's UIL competition. For more
than 45 minutes Ben held a captive audience as
he navigated and narrated with the help of film
clips of Hereford Whiteface bands spanning from
the years 1960 through 1971.
Unlike the poor quality of foo
d and the slow-to-no
service provided by the catering company at the
alumni association's first all-school reunion in
Grapevine in summer of 2006, the food and service
provided by the managers and waitstaff at Love
and War in Texas
Restaurant was second to none. The Texas-style
cooking came straight out of the kitchen served
hot, fresh, and in plentiful portions. And to top it
off - it all tasted good!
Everyone seemed quite pleased with every
aspect of that evening's event and the
efforts that was put forth by Mr. Mays and the
alumni association's planning committee.
